Enhancing English Language Through Films and TV Shows

Blog

Author : Bavya. SEducation : M.A.,English, M.A.Tamil, Ph.D Research scholar (English)Profession : Content writerDate: 03-1-2024 Enhancing English Language Through Films and TV Shows The journey of mastering a language involves embracing a variety of tools. And for me, the world of Englishlanguage through films and TV shows has proven to be an effective platform. It was the best way for honing my language skills. In this blog post, let’s see how immersing in cinematic experiences significantly improve our understanding of spoken English, utilizing visual cues, facial expressions, and contextual information. Interestingly, RM from the Korean pop group BTS shared how he learned English by watching the sitcom, Friends. His mother bought him all the DVDs, and he binge-watched them, starting with Korean subtitles, then English subtitles, eventually removing them. This highlights the effectiveness of immersing oneself in visual media for language learning, a sentiment I resonate with in my own language journey. Captivating Visuals English language through films and TV shows are like a visual masterpiece that brings the language to life. Unlike written texts, visual media offers a rich collection of images and actions that beautifully complement spoken words. For example, a scene where characters are immersed in a heated discussion. The visual cues – gestures, expressions, and body language – add layers of meaning to the spoken words, making it so much easier to comprehend the nuances of the conversation. It’s this interplay of visuals and dialogue that makes language come alive in a way that textbooks or written materials alone can’t quite capture. Example: Scene -A Heated Discussion in a Coffee Shop Visual Cues:Characters are leaning forward, gesticulating passionately, and their facial expressions range from frustration to determination. Understanding:The visual cues amplify the emotional intensity of the conversation, allowing viewers to grasp the nuances even before fully comprehending the spoken words. Facial Expressions as Language Facial expressions serve as a fascinating unspoken language in films and TV shows. They become a powerful tool, conveying a spectrum of emotions, intentions, and reactions, acting as a crucial element in understanding the spoken dialogue. I’ve noticed that a character’s subtle smirk or furrowed brow can provide us with valuable context to the words being spoken, almost like a window into the character’s thoughts and feelings. Example: Scene: A character receives surprising news. FacialExpressions: Wide eyes, a dropped jaw, and a hesitant smile. Understanding: The character’s facial expressions convey shock, disbelief, and a hint of uncertainty, enhancing the viewer’s grasp of the situation. Context is Key One of the standout advantages of learning through visual media is the wealth of contextual information embedded in scenes. Context becomes a powerful enhancer, offering insights into the setting, relationships between characters, and the overall storyline. Take, for instance, a dialogue-heavy moment in a detective series The visual context, whether it’s crime scene details or character interactions, becomes a treasure trove of essential clues. It’s these visual cues that provide me with a deeper understanding of the spoken words and contribute to the unravelling of plot twists. Subtitles as a Support Tool Subtitles are useful for learning any language. Starting with subtitles helps connect spoken and written English, especially when dealing with witty remarks or informal expressions. In the beginning, it’s good to turn up the volume and use subtitles together. This helps you get used to the language sounds and written words. Subtitles act like a safety net, linking spoken and written English. As you improve, try using subtitles less so you can better understand the language without always needing to read along. This way, you can fully embrace the natural spoken language. A Humorous Exchange with Colloquial Expressions Spoken Words: “That joke was a real knee-slapper!” Subtitles: “That joke was incredibly funny!” Understanding: Subtitles clarify the colloquial expression, ensuring learners catch the humour while familiarizing themselves with informal language nuances. To Sumup Englishlanguage through films and TV shows offers a multisensory language learning experience. By immersing yourself in these visual narratives, you not only enhance your comprehension of spoken English but also gain exposure to cultural nuances, colloquial expressions, and diverse accents. Use subtitles as a supportive tool initially, and gradually reduce reliance to challenge yourself. So, grab some popcorn, hit play, and let the captivating world of cinema become your language classroom. Happy learning!
